GoPro’s Video of the Day: March 12, 2013

Today, GoPro released their very first black and white video, showcasing their favorite band, Typhoon. They shot it in San Francisco with the Hero 3: black edition camera. The venue looked like a very small, intimate and hipster place. The video definitely had a chill and relaxed vibe. We also noticed that GoPro used a fish eye lens to get a sense of what was going on all in one frame. It provided a more wide view of the viewing around it. The camera was able to capture clear and vivid picture and video even though the place looked like it lacked good lighting.

GoPro’s HERO3: White Edition

The Hero3: White Edition has the same high performance specs as its original version, Original HD Hero camera. However this new innovation improves through new built-in Wi-fi, a new UI, as well as being 25% lighter 30% smaller. It also includes waterproof specs to 197′ (60m).

The Hero 3: White edition is capable of capturing 1080p 30 fps and 720p 60 fps video plus 5MP photos at a rate of 3 photos per second. This allows for the capture of professional quality video. With the increased resolution, the capture creates improved sharpness as well as less distortion. Finally the new product allows for a redesigned audio system that filters between wind during high speed activities and the immersive sounds of the sport being captured.

Hero 3 Silver Edition

The GoPro Hero3 Silver Edition is the middle of the pack offering for the newest line of GoPro camera line. It sits around the $299.99 mark and is a smaller and weighs less than the previous generation of GoPro Hero 2. Aside from being lighter, GoPro has updated their whole Hero line with WiFi connectivity, and a new updated LCD screen. The Silver Edition bridges the gap between their lowest end Hero3 White and Hero 3 Black (most expensive).

So what do you get over the White Edition if you buy the Silver? First off, the Silver edition has a better lens than the White (although debatable) but both offer the same aperture for their different lenses. Second, The Silver edition has more customizable modes which can be tailored better for the needs of those who are using it.. Third, the Silver has a higher resolution than the White and allows for a cleaner picture (which is why I said debatable). I think the better imagine quality is due mostly to the higher resolution sensor rather than a “Prosumer” lens that GoPro states.

The new edition even though upgraded doesn’t come without it’s problems. There seems to be a firestorm on the internet about the new series of Hero3’s that point to poor quality control. People have complained of broken USB connection ports, dead LCD screen, and pretty much anything electrical related. Its wide array of electrical problems isn’t the only thing that people have complained about. There was a really bad software bug that made their videos choppy and unusable. Their customer service was poor in responding to this bug. People had complained of long waits, and under trained customer service agents. Even though this product came out in August it took till December for GoPro to address it in a letter stating their software bug and stating they are working to fix their customer service.
